Teamwork, Creativity, and Games: FuturLab's 2024 Game Jam

One of the most eagerly awaited events on the FuturLab calendar is our annual Game Jam—a 48-hour whirlwind of creativity and collaboration! Since kicking off this tradition in 2022, the Game Jam has become a much-loved celebration of innovation and teamwork. It’s a chance for everyone to step into new roles, stretch their imagination, and bring fresh ideas to life, all while enjoying a bit of friendly competition.

This year’s theme was ‘Navigate,’ and our teams jumped right in, brainstorming exciting game concepts. Whether working remotely or collaborating in our Brighton office, everyone gave it their all to create some truly amazing video games.

To keep our remote jammers fueled and inspired, we sent out special Game Jam goodie boxes filled with swag and snacks. For those in the office, we provided plenty of treats and transformed our usual meeting room into a zen den—complete with calming music, mindful activities, and a scent diffuser for the perfect chill-out space.

We want this event to be the best it can be for our teams, so each year we put together an anonymous feedback survey where everyone can share their thoughts on what they liked and what could work better next time. It’s really heartwarming to see how much people love the Game Jam, and why it deserves a spot in the FuturLab calendar each year:

It was an extremely valuable experience for me to try something new outside my usual role, learn some new skills and work with a different group of people and connect with others at the company. It's such a great opportunity and provides so many benefits that could transfer into our own work and further experience.

It's perfect for some intensive learning as teams will often lack resources, forcing some people to get out of their comfort zone and attempt to implement something into the game they have no experience with. It was especially great to see some members even taking on roles entirely different to their job titles!

We closed off our Game Jam on the Friday and the whole company were encouraged to play all the games, share their thoughts and vote for their favourites across a range of categories. Our overall winner was Sand Junkie and the team received a trophy for their efforts!
